Project Number
MassDOT Project 612609
Project Description
This project involves improvements to the Tewksbury Town Center intersections of Main Street, Pleasant Street, North Street, and East Street. Previous studies have indicated that these intersections experience delays for traffic during peak hour conditions of the day. The reconstruction and reconfiguration of these intersections are expected to provide better traffic flow and safety improvements.
Project Location
Tewksbury Town Center – Main Street, Pleasant Street, North Street, and East Street Intersections
Project Updates
May 27, 2025
The project design team met with the Select Board on May 20, 2025 to update the Board and the public on the project status. Multiple design options were presented including the following:
- Design Option A – Reconfigured signalized intersection at Main/Pleasant and a new signal at East/North.
- Design Option B – Roundabout at Main/Pleasant and a mini-roundabout at East/North.
- Design Option C – Reconfigured signalized intersection at Main/Pleasant and a mini-roundabout at East/North.
- Design Option D – Roundabout at Main/Pleasant and a new signal at East/North.
The Select Board and the public asked questions and provided comments on the various proposed conceptual design options. The Select Board, by a 4-1 vote, approved a motion to support advancing the design of Option B which includes a roundabout at the primary Main Street/Pleasant Street intersection and a mini-roundabout at the East Street/North Street intersection.
Below is a link to a MassDOT page providing information on roundabouts, benefits of roundabouts, and explains how roundabouts differ from rotaries.
